The Old Ratcliffan 2010 | Obituaries Major Robert Tomlinson Old Ratcliffian 1957 - 1960 1st August 1942 - 26th February 2010 George Robert Tomlinson died on 26th February 2010. He was born in Leicester on 1st August 1942, the youngest of four children, educated in Leicester and at Ratcliffe College until 1960, when he became an Officer Cadet in the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, from where he was then commissioned into the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment. After further studies at the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham, he served with his regiment in Germany, with later attachments to the Ulster Defence Regiment in Northern Ireland, the Sultan’s Armed Forces in the Oman, the United Nations in Cyprus and Sinai and the Ministry of Defence in London. On leaving the army he settled in Hindon in Wiltshire, where he worked briefly for Allied Dunbar. He married Jocelyn who predeceased him. There followed short tours with the British Red Cross in Central Africa, the United Nations in the Balkans, and security assignments in Papua New Guinea, Zaire and Kashmir. Latterly he was an active member of the Royal British Legion. He attended Mass regularly in Tisbury near his home in Hindon. He was a keen horseman and winter sportsman. He leaves a sister and two brothers and more than a few good friends. His funeral at Wardour was attended by 300 mourners. The Mass was concelebrated by 4 priests, 3 of whom were Old Ratcliffians; Fr Simon Giles (60), Fr Louis Beasley-Suffolk (60) and Fr David Tobin (59). May he rest in peace. Nicholas Tomlinson (56) Fr Tony O’Dowd Old Ratcliffian 1942-47 1st September 1929 - 15th August 2010 Fr Tony was born on 1st September 1929, a native of Hyson Green, Nottingham. He was one of three brothers, Mons Peter O’Dowd (43) and Fr William O’Dowd (43), who were priests of the Nottingham Diocese, along with their nephew Fr Philip O’Dowd. May they all rest in peace. Prior to attending the Seminary, Fr Tony was educated at Ratcliffe College. He trained for the priesthood at the English College, Valladolid and St Edmund’s Ware. He was ordained for the Diocese at St Barnabas’ Cathedral on 13th May 1956. Fr Tony died peacefully at St Mary’s Nursing Home, Ednaston in the early hours of Sunday 15 August 2010.
