THE RIK HUGHES INTER-SCHOOL CRICKET CUP THE TAYLOR MIXED HOCKEY CUP

VS LOUGHBOROUGH GRAMMAR & OPENING OF THE NEW ASTROTURF

 SUNDAY 13TH AUGUST 2017 SUNDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2017

Old Ratcliffians: 4 Ratcliffe College: 3
The Old Ratcliffian side hosted the Old Loughburians in the
first game played for the repurposed Rik Hughes trophy. The
Grammar won the toss and chose to bat on the wicket that
looked as if it might offer the bowlers some help. However,
the OR bowlers struggled to find a good line and length, and
Jack Beresford (24) and Charles Kindleysides rarely looked in
any trouble, putting on 67 for the first wicket. Beresford was
eventually bowled, but Kindleysides and Danny Murty ploughed
on regardless, taking the score past the 200 mark before
Jack Nightingale had Murty caught by Toby Smith (16) for 75.
Eventually, the Old Loughburians finished their 40 overs on
236-2, with Kindleysides 101 not out.

The OR batsmen found the bowling of Ed Bird (3-23), Vimal
Lodhia (2-28) and, most significantly, Ed Collins (4-25) hard
to cope with, as they slumped disappointingly to 59-8. Jack
Nightingale scored 25 before being ninth man out, and it was left
to Tom Allen (13) to top score for the home side, making 35 from
just 24 balls to get the ORs past the 100 mark, as they finished
102-10. Although a 125 run defeat for the Old Ratcliffians was
conclusive enough, both sides certainly enjoyed the game The OR Mixed Hockey Team
Rik Hughes The players in action As seems to be becoming tradition, the sun shone for the return
of the Old Ratcliffians and the official opening of the new
pitch. We welcomed Sam Ward, the England and Great Britain
international hockey player, to the School to open the new blue
Astroturf. Sam has earned a reputation as a prolific goal-scorer
on the domestic scene, and it was a great pleasure to welcome
him to the School. Following a blessing by Fr Philip Sainter
(69), the ribbon was cut, and a Ratcliffe mixed XI and the Old
Ratcliffians played an entertaining match for the Taylor Cup. Sam
kindly stayed to help coach the Ratcliffe team and presented the
trophy at the end of the match.

The game started at a very leisurely pace, with the not-so-old
Old Boys (with some exceptions) enjoying playing on the new
surface, and the girls pacing themselves, as they realised that Fr Sainter (69) blessing the pitch before the game
we had no female subs! Thankfully, the hockey on show was of a
good standard, and the Old Ratcliffians soon took the lead with

(04). The School then hit back with two goals of their own before
a second OR goal followed from Phil Lawton (08), who found
the bottom corner with perfect precision. A third and fourth goal
followed for the ORs before the School got another goal back.
