Nicole Richardson (01): “It’s been
another wonderfully busy year for the
family business at The Star Inn 1744 in
Thrussington! We are very pleased to have
increased our bedrooms from seven to
nine, now including an accessible ground
floor ‘Superior Room’. It’s proving to be
very popular! Along with this, we have
also given the building a little makeover,
with a fresh coat of paint and change
of colour scheme. 2015 has also seen us
launch our new website, a la carte menu,
and an extended classics menu. It’s also
been a great year for our football team,
The Star FC, which saw them promoted
to Division 3 of the Alliance League. This
team of finely-tuned athletes comprises
of some renowned Old Ratcliffians, so we
will no doubt see them storm to the top
of the league in no time: Scott Piecha
(00) (captain), Alistair Richardson (00),
Iain Laurie (99), Will Coupland (01), Joe
Coupland (09), Patrick Coupland (10),
Saroj Ekanayake (01), Kristian Richmond
(98), Ollie Mills (10), Ed Stokes (08),
Dan Disarra (08), Charlie Barre (10), Joe
Madden (09) and Dan Jelley (09). We
always love to see a friendly Ratcliffian
face at The Star, so be sure to come and
see us very soon.”
Etienne Vicariot (67) with his wife, Catherine mould and go to new pastures, somehow
Etienne Vicariot (67): “I spent one year
at Ratcliffe in the Fifth Form, leaving
in July 1967. This was, by far, the best
year of my teens, and I have many good
memories of it. After this, I went back to
France to study Agronomy at university.
I then married Catherine, and we spent
two years in Dakar, Senegal, where I was
teaching Agriculture and Economics.
Back home, I started working in the farm
machinery business, while Catherine
was graduating as a gynaecologist. We
settled in 1983 in Orleans, where I joined
John Deere France. We have two sons and
a daughter who all live and work in Paris in
the advertisement industry. I will retire in
February 2016 and I am looking forward
to this new life. I have many activities
planned, such as helping the schoolboys
and girls of the small town that we live in
with their homework (as their parents do
not even speak French), as well as playing

golf, flying, sailing and travelling.”
Fr John Gott (55): “I celebrated fifty years
of priesthood in the Diocese of Leeds on
June 12th 2015. I have been parish priest
in the Upper Calder Valley of The Good
Shepherd Church, Mytholmroyd, in the
South Pennines for the last thirty-six
years. The parish covers ninety-eight
square miles of wonderful walking on
the Pennine Way over the hills, valleys,
rivers and reservoirs. If you come this way,
drop in and have a cuppa, or something
stronger!”
Keelan Kukk (10): “Since leaving Ratcliffe,
I have graduated from Loughborough
University and am now working full-time
as a Commercial Analyst. The biggest
news, I suppose, would be that I gained
a First Degree Black Belt in Hung Kuen
Kung Fu whilst at university.”

Frank Nieuwenhuys (68): “My goodness,
it’s forty-seven years since I left Ratcliffe! Hayley Marvin (12)
It always seemed that, like my father and
older brothers, I would end up working
in the fashion industry, but after a brief
period of training, I was ready to break the
ending up in transport logistics. The
international freight scene appealed and
took me all over Europe and Scandinavia,
managing projects and developing
business opportunities through a network
of agents, from Turkey in the East to
Norway and Finland in the far North. In
1977, I married Jill, a teacher. Together,
we have three wonderful children, all of
whom now pursue successful careers of
their own in London. A career in transport
was always going to see a degree of
turbulence, which proved to be the case,
but the challenges it provided meant
that successes were always particularly
sweet. By the late 1990s, I was ready for
a new experience, and in January 2000,
I joined Stena Line AB, the Swedish ferry
and shipping company, being appointed
as Regional Freight Manager for the UK
and Republic of Ireland. In 2013, the
opportunity to ‘retire’ arose, which I

jumped at. However, having no job at all
seemed a bit too big a step, so I decided
run my own consultancy business, which
is something that occupies me when I am
not cycling, skiing, walking or enjoying
motorsport, all of which keep me both fit
and busy. Happy days!”
Frank Nieuwenhuys (68)
Hayley Marvin (12): “I have just returned
to Sheffield Hallam University for
my final year, studying Marketing
Communications and Advertising. I spent
my third year on placement at Robert
Bosch Ltd, where I had the pleasure of
organising and also representing Bosch
at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Whilst living in London, I participated in
the London Moonwalk, raising money
for the Walk the Walk breast cancer
charity. Following my placement, I had an
incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience
on the East Coast of Australia, travelling
from Sydney to Cairns!”
John Arnold (71): “The last twelve months
have seen great change for me. It was in
September 2014 that I was appointed
as Bishop of Salford, which, after more
than thirty years in London, has meant
a big change. I was installed in my new
diocese on the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception (the ‘Immac’ of Ratcliffe
days), and must say that people have
been very welcoming. There is much to
do in the sense that many of our priests
are retiring, and there needs to be a plan
for the future, so I must learn a lot before
I can make decisions. However, there is
