         THE REYNARD GOLF TROPHY

         FRIDAY 8TH JULY 2016

The Old Ratcliffians were treated to a glorious, sunny afternoon
at Rothley Park to contest the 40th Reynard Trophy. The course
was in fine condition, and playing conditions were tough, with the
prevailing easterly wind making the back 9 particularly testing.
It was the usual Reynard form. Great company, committed Old
Ratcliffians (keen, but, in the most part, lacking practice), lots of
laughs and lots more lost balls, missed putts and ‘if only’s.

Our competition was played with Stableford points, with each
of the golfers getting ¾ handicap allowance. Playing in the last
group, we knew that Declan McAuley (16) and Jack Hancock (16)
(playing respectively off handicaps of 10 and 5) had played very
well indeed. On all four par 3 holes and on the longest drive,
their names were in an unassailable position, with the markers
in remarkable shape – tap in birdie distance – and the drive just
too far for us to match. It felt cheap and nasty to know that the
markers weren’t ours, but those of the Society playing before us,
and that all that good golf would go unrewarded. Sorry, chaps.
Abe Mee (92) managed to come third with 33 points, while Declan
and Jack both scored 34 points. Declan had scored one more
point on the back 9, so he triumphed in his first appearance. He
was presented with the trophy and a fabulous Ratcliffe shield to Mike Meredith (89), Declan McAuley (16) & Abe Mee (92)
         commemorate the victory.
Thank you to everyone who has represented the Old Ratcliffians
